Overview
A high-protein diet is an eating pattern involving protein intake substantially above the minimum reference value (0.8 g/kg body weight), usually in the range of 1.6–2.2 g/kg. Unlike many trendy diets, its effects — greater satiety, protection of muscle mass during a caloric deficit, higher thermic cost of digestion — are backed by solid, reproducible evidence from clinical research.
A systematic review by Leidy and colleagues consistently showed that diets with elevated protein content improve appetite control and support fat loss while preserving muscle mass, compared with diets with standard protein content at the same calorie level. The satiety effect stems partly from protein's stronger influence on appetite-regulating hormones (including peptide YY and GLP-1) compared with carbohydrates or fats.
Who can this realistically help? People losing weight who want to minimize muscle loss, strength athletes, and older adults, in whom the natural decline in muscle protein synthesis (sarcopenia) requires higher protein intake than in younger adults. People with chronic kidney disease should discuss increased protein intake with their doctor, since it may place additional strain on the kidneys in this specific group.
Mechanism of action
Protein has the highest thermic effect of food among the macronutrients (20–30% of the energy from protein is used up digesting and metabolizing it, versus 5–10% for carbohydrates and 0–3% for fats), which partly explains its effect on energy balance. In addition, amino acids — leucine especially — stimulate the release of satiety hormones (PYY, GLP-1) more strongly than other macronutrients and suppress ghrelin, the hunger hormone secreted by the stomach.
In the context of protecting muscle mass during a caloric deficit, higher protein intake supplies more of the exogenous amino acids needed for muscle protein synthesis, partly offsetting the catabolic effect of an energy deficit — a mechanism that is especially relevant when combined with resistance training.
