Hon-shimeji (Lyophyllum shimeji) is a wild-growing mushroom from the same family as cultivated shimeji (Hypsizygus tessellatus), which is a frequent source of confusion. In Japan, the name 'hon-shimeji' (literally 'true shimeji') historically referred specifically to this species, prized for its intense, nutty aroma. Because L. shimeji forms mycorrhizae with the roots of living trees and doesn't lend itself to profitable industrial cultivation, Japan's Forestry Agency has regulated that the name 'hon-shimeji' may not be used for cultivated Hypsizygus tessellatus.
The species also occurs in dry pine forests of northern Scandinavia. It doesn't occur naturally in Poland and isn't commercially available there.

The only available molecular study concerns genome sequencing and identifies gene families intermediate between mycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi — which explains why the species is so difficult to cultivate industrially, but says nothing about specific bioactive compound pathways. No specific health mechanism has so far been identified for Lyophyllum shimeji.
