Overview
The elm oyster mushroom (Hypsizygus ulmarius) grows naturally on dead elm wood, including in Poland. It has a light cream-colored cap and thicker, meatier flesh than a typical oyster mushroom.
In recent years, laboratory and animal-model studies have examined its polysaccharides for antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and glucose-metabolism-supporting effects — this is still early-stage data, unconfirmed by clinical studies in humans.
Who can this actually help, and who not? The evidence here is even thinner than for most other functional mushrooms described in this knowledge base — in practice, it amounts to one rat study and a review of in vitro data, with no clinical studies in humans at all. Realistically, the elm oyster mushroom works well as a valuable, low-calorie dietary ingredient. There's no basis, however, for treating it as 'liver protection' or an equivalent to well-studied medicinal mushrooms — people expecting a documented therapeutic effect will be disappointed.
Where it's found
Hypsizygus ulmarius grows naturally as a saprotroph on dead or dying hardwood — mainly elm, but also maple and poplar — in the temperate climate zones of North America, Europe (including Poland), and Asia.
Mechanism of action
Biological activity is attributed mainly to the polysaccharide fraction (including beta-glucans) and phenolic compounds. In rat studies, the polysaccharide HUP reduced oxidative stress in the liver and improved blood biochemical parameters after alcohol-induced damage.
In this type of research on mushroom polysaccharides, the hepatoprotective mechanism typically described is an increase in antioxidant enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase, catalase) and reduced lipid peroxidation in liver tissue. The exact molecular mechanism of the HUP fraction's action has not, however, been fully clarified, and the result comes from a single study in one animal model.
Administration of the HUP polysaccharide
In a rat study, animals were given an isolated polysaccharide from the fruiting bodies in the context of alcohol-induced liver damage.
Reduced oxidative stress
The polysaccharide decreased markers of oxidative stress in liver tissue.
Improved blood biochemical parameters
More favorable biochemical results were observed compared with the control group.
