Overview
Ganoderma lingzhi is a reddish-brown, lacquered-looking mushroom that was described for decades simply as Ganoderma lucidum — until 2012, when the team of Cao, Wu and Dai formally split it off as a distinct species based on molecular analysis. The true, European Ganoderma lucidum sensu stricto is a different thing from the mushroom cultivated at scale in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan — the latter is mostly Ganoderma lingzhi.
This has a practical implication for consumers: a DNA analysis of 20 commercial 'reishi' products (Loyd et al., 2018) found that 93% contained material genetically corresponding to G. lingzhi, and none contained true European G. lucidum. This entry doesn't describe a 'new, better' mushroom — it explains what the product most often reaching consumers under the name reishi/lingzhi/Red Reishi actually is.

Mainly people who buy products labeled 'reishi,' 'lingzhi,' or 'Red Reishi' anyway and want to know that in practice they're getting the same raw material under a different name — there's no point paying extra for 'Red Reishi' as a supposedly more potent variant. Where it's found

Mechanism of action
The profile of active compounds is analogous to what's described for classic reishi: polysaccharides with immunomodulatory action and triterpenes with anti-inflammatory action. Chemical analysis showed that extracts from authentic European G. lucidum contain markedly fewer triterpenic acids than extracts from G. lingzhi. Because most of the clinical studies cited as evidence for the effects of 'reishi' were conducted on Asian material predating 2012, it isn't practically possible to separate out a distinct evidence base for the two species.
Beta-glucan polysaccharides bind to pattern-recognition receptors (including Dectin-1) on the surface of macrophages and NK cells, triggering an immunomodulatory response cascade. Key caveat: because the species split only occurred in 2012, none of these mechanisms has been formally verified separately for G. lingzhi versus G. lucidum sensu stricto.
Binding of beta-glucans to innate immunity receptors
Polysaccharides from the fungal cell wall bind to Dectin-1-type receptors on the surface of macrophages and NK cells.
