Overview

Cordyceps militaris is a species of entomopathogenic fungus that also occurs naturally in Europe, parasitizing insect pupae and larvae. Unlike its Himalayan cousin, C. militaris has been successfully cultivated in laboratories since the 1990s — on grain substrates (most often rice) or in liquid cultures — without needing to parasitize a live insect. This makes it widely available, relatively cheap, and far more precisely standardizable for cordycepin content than material collected from the wild.

When someone today buys capsules or powder labeled simply 'cordyceps' from a herbal shop or online, in the vast majority of cases — regardless of what the label suggests — it's this cultivated C. militaris. Interestingly, laboratory studies indicate that cultivated C. militaris often contains higher concentrations of cordycepin (the main studied active compound) than authentic wild C. sinensis, so it isn't an 'inferior substitute' but a distinct species with its own, growing body of research.

Who will realistically benefit, and who is likely to be disappointed? The data best support people looking for general immune support and subjective energy — an 8-week RCT showed a real increase in NK cell activity and a drop in pro-inflammatory markers (IL-1β, IL-6) in healthy adults, making that a sensible target group. The promise of improved athletic performance in already well-trained individuals fares much worse — a study on experienced cyclists showed no improvement in VO2max versus placebo, so athletes hoping for a measurable performance jump should expect at most a subjective effect, not a physiological breakthrough. People with autoimmune conditions, those taking immunosuppressant or anticoagulant medication, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid the supplement or consult a doctor.

Where it's found

Cordyceps militaris occurs naturally in temperate climate zones, including Europe, where it parasitizes moth pupae, larvae, and other insects in damp forests and meadows. Unlike the Himalayan C. sinensis, it doesn't require extreme altitudes or a unique host — since the 1990s it has been successfully commercially cultivated on grain substrates in Korea, China, and increasingly in Europe.

History of use

The species was scientifically described as early as the 18th century (as Clavaria militaris by Carl Linnaeus in 1753) and has long been used in traditional Korean medicine as a cheaper, locally available equivalent of the rare Himalayan cordyceps. The real commercial breakthrough, however, came only in the 1990s, when effective methods were developed for cultivating fruiting bodies on grain substrates under controlled laboratory conditions — this 'cultivation revolution' made cultivated C. militaris a practical commercial substitute, and today it accounts for the vast majority of products sold under the generic name 'cordyceps.'

Mechanism of action

The main studied compounds are cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine) and fungal polysaccharides. Cordycepin is a structural analog of adenosine and, in vitro, affects pathways related to RNA synthesis and AMPK activation, which could theoretically increase mitochondrial ATP production and improve muscle oxygen utilization; polysaccharides are studied mainly for their modulation of immune response (NK cell activity, cytokines). These effects are well documented in vitro and in animal models, but translation into a measurable improvement in physical performance in healthy, trained humans remains inconsistent — some clinical studies show no significant difference versus placebo.

A deeper pharmacokinetic problem with cordycepin: after oral administration it is very rapidly broken down by adenosine deaminase (ADA) into a much less active metabolite (3'-deoxyinosine), which limits its real bioavailability and explains part of the gap between strong in vitro effects and more modest clinical results. Cordycepin's structural similarity to adenosine allows it to bind adenosine receptors (A1/A2A) and affect the AMPK pathway. In parallel, the polysaccharide fraction (including beta-glucans) works through a different route — binding to pattern-recognition receptors on immune cells (including Dectin-1 and Toll-like receptors), activating the NF-κB pathway and modulating cytokine secretion.

After oral administration, cordycepin is rapidly broken down by adenosine deaminase into the less active 3'-deoxyinosine, which limits its real bioavailability.
