Some of these claims have real backing in research — others are honest at the level of raw chemical composition but misleading in the context of a typical supplement serving. On top of that there's a practical problem marketing stays quiet about: some products on the market have repeatedly been found contaminated with cyanobacterial toxins or pharmaceutical residues. We check point by point which of these claims hold up and which don't.

Two different organisms sold under one "superfood" label

Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is actually a cyanobacterium (a photosynthesizing bacterium), not an alga in the strict botanical sense, while chlorella is a genuine single-celled freshwater alga. Despite their different biological origins, both are sold in an almost identical marketing context — as "superfoods" with a nutrient density supposedly surpassing almost everything else in a typical diet, with promises ranging from immune support, through heavy-metal detoxification, to "complete protein" that rivals meat.

The word "superfood" itself has no regulatory or scientific definition — it's a marketing term, not a nutritional category. That doesn't mean spirulina and chlorella are worthless; it means every specific claim needs to be checked individually, rather than accepting the whole package of promises on the strength of one catchy word.

This article's methodology

We check three categories of claims separately: (1) claims about chemical composition per 100 g of dry weight — often true, but misleading in the context of a real serving; (2) claims about clinical effects (cholesterol, blood pressure) — with real, though inconsistent, research support; (3) claims about safety and product "purity" — where the documentation shows real cases of contamination that marketing usually stays quiet about.

"Complete protein" and "more iron than spinach" — true about composition, misleading about the serving

Myth

Spirulina is a concentrated source of protein and iron that meaningfully supplements the diet — after all, it contains as much as 60-70% protein by dry weight, more than meat or soy.

Fact

That's true when calculated per 100 g of dry weight — but the typical, recommended serving of a spirulina supplement is 3-5 g per day, which at 60-70% protein content works out to roughly 2-3 g of protein. That's a fraction of the daily requirement (usually 50-100+ g for an adult) and far less than a single egg or a small portion of meat. The same applies to iron: a high content per 100 g doesn't translate into a meaningful dietary contribution at a serving measured in grams, and the bioavailability of iron from algae can additionally be limited by other compounds present in the same matrix (e.g., phycocyanin and fiber).

This isn't fraud in a legal sense — the chemical-composition figures per 100 g are usually accurate. The problem lies in marketing pairing an impressive number (content per 100 g) with the much smaller amount actually consumed in practice, creating the impression of a far greater nutritional contribution than the supplement actually provides.

What the cholesterol research shows — promising, but inconsistent

This meta-analysis covered 20 studies (23 arms, 1,076 participants) and found that spirulina supplementation significantly lowered LDL, total cholesterol (TC), and triglycerides (TG), while raising HDL. The doses studied ranged from 0.2 to 30 g per day over 2 to 52 weeks — a far wider dose range than a typical supplement serving (3-5 g), which makes it hard to draw firm conclusions for the average consumer.

The results sound convincing — but it's worth checking whether they hold up

Moderate evidence

Two meta-analyses showing a consistent, favorable direction of effect on lipids and blood pressure sound like solid evidence. As the next section shows, though, a newer and broader 2025 meta-analysis, partly covering the same primary studies, reached far more tempered conclusions — a typical problem in this field: small, short primary studies of varying methodological quality produce unstable results depending on which of them get pulled into a given meta-analysis.

The analysis covered 12 studies on chlorella and 9 on spirulina. The results were far less clear-cut than in earlier meta-analyses: chlorella supplementation had a neutral effect on blood pressure and lipid profile, while spirulina showed only a small, though statistically significant, reduction in diastolic blood pressure (-0.42 mmHg — a clinically negligible effect) with no significant effect on lipids.

Conflicting meta-analyses are a warning sign, not a coincidence

When three meta-analyses on the same topic, published within a few years of each other, reach clearly different conclusions — from "significant improvement in cholesterol and blood pressure" to "neutral or clinically negligible effect" — it usually means the underlying body of primary research is heterogeneous: small trials, varying doses (from 0.2 to 30 g, roughly a 150-fold range), varying durations, and varying methodological quality across individual studies. In that situation, it's more reasonable to treat the effect as uncertain and context-dependent than to pick the most optimistic of the available meta-analyses as "the true one."

The problem marketing doesn't mention: documented contamination

This study analyzed samples of cyanobacteria-based supplements (including products from the genus Aphanizomenon, harvested from natural bodies of water where they can co-occur with toxin-producing species such as Microcystis aeruginosa). Microcystins — hepatotoxic cyanobacterial toxins — were detected in 85 of 87 samples tested, and 63 samples (72%) exceeded the safety limit set by the state of Oregon (1 µg/g). Cyanobacteria harvested from open, uncontrolled bodies of water are particularly exposed to this kind of cross-contamination, unlike spirulina cultivated in controlled, closed growing ponds.

An analysis of 52 spirulina and chlorella products available on the market (29 conventional, 23 organic) found that all samples were within EU limits for heavy metals, but many products contained detectable pharmaceutical residues — most often caffeine, and also metronidazole, carbamazepine, benzocaine, and tramadol. This is the first study to systematically check for drug residues in microalgae-based supplements, in both conventional and organic versions.

The irony of "natural detox": the product itself can be contaminated

Spirulina and chlorella are often marketed as agents that "detoxify" the body of heavy metals or environmental toxins — a claim for which there's practically no solid clinical evidence in healthy people. At the same time, documented cases show that the products themselves are sometimes contaminated with cyanobacterial toxins or pharmaceutical residues, likely as a result of contaminated water used in open-pond cultivation or harvesting. This doesn't mean every product on the market is contaminated — a newer study (Sochacka et al., 2025) found no exceedances of heavy-metal limits — but it does mean that product quality and sourcing control matter more for safety than the word "spirulina" or "chlorella" on the label.

Safety and groups requiring caution

Beyond the risk of product contamination, spirulina and chlorella also have their own direct contraindications and limitations worth knowing about regardless of the quality of a particular batch.

Who should exercise particular caution

Spirulina has documented immune-stimulating properties, which makes it potentially risky for people with autoimmune conditions (e.g., multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) or those taking immunosuppressive medication — a theoretical stimulation of the immune system could work against the goal of the therapy. Chlorella is rich in vitamin K, which matters for people on vitamin K antagonist anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), where a sudden change in dietary vitamin K intake can disrupt the stability of dosing. People with phenylketonuria should check the specific product's ingredient list for additives, and people with thyroid conditions should know that some algae-based products can contain significant amounts of iodine, which matters for both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before starting supplementation, given the limited safety research in this group and the risk of contamination.

The effect on cholesterol and blood pressure has real, though inconsistent, research support — newer, broader meta-analyses temper the enthusiasm of earlier, smaller reviews. And the "detox" claims remain essentially unconfirmed, while it's the quality and purity of the product itself — not its supposed cleansing properties — that should be the consumer's main concern.

If you like the taste or the ritual of taking spirulina or chlorella and choose a product from a credible manufacturer with public purity testing, there's no reason to give it up. It's not worth treating them, though, as a substitute for a balanced diet, protection against heavy metals, or a guaranteed way to lower cholesterol — those are promises that outstrip the current state of the evidence.

The most reliable test of a "superfood" isn't how many wonder ingredients it contains per 100 grams, but what it actually delivers in the serving someone eats day to day — and whether the product itself is what it claims to be.
