HbA1c — a three-month memory of your blood sugar

Unlike a single fasting glucose reading, which only captures the moment of the test, glycated hemoglobin reflects your average blood sugar level over the last 2-3 months — which lets it catch prediabetes far earlier and more reliably than a single glucose reading, which can come back normal despite a growing problem.

A lipid panel is more than just total cholesterol

A growing number of cardiology guidelines point to ApoB (apolipoprotein B) as a more accurate predictor of cardiovascular risk than LDL alone — ApoB reflects the actual number of atherogenic particles circulating in the blood, while LDL only measures the amount of cholesterol carried within those particles.

With certain lipid profiles (e.g. high triglycerides), LDL alone can understate real cardiovascular risk compared to what ApoB shows.

TSH and free thyroid hormones

Ferritin — iron stores deplete long before anemia

Ferritin, the protein that stores iron, is a far more sensitive indicator of the body's iron reserves than blood iron concentration itself, which fluctuates strongly over the course of a day. This matters especially for women under 40 (heavy periods, pregnancies) and endurance athletes — fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, and difficulty concentrating can appear while iron stores are already depleted, long before overt anemia detectable on a basic blood count develops.

When a result calls for urgent consultation

Don't ignore recurring abnormal results

A single borderline result rarely requires an immediate response, but abnormalities that recur across several tests (especially HbA1c above the normal range or markedly elevated hs-CRP) are a signal not to delay seeing a doctor.
