Overview

A basic blood test panel — complete blood count, lipid panel, fasting glucose, liver function tests and TSH — is the cheapest and most widely available preventive tool in medicine. The practical problem isn't the availability of these tests, but their interpretation: the mere fact that a result falls within the laboratory 'normal range' doesn't always mean optimal health, and a result slightly outside the reference range doesn't always mean disease.

Laboratory reference ranges are built statistically — they usually cover the middle 95% of results from people considered healthy in a given population. This means a single result always has to be read in context: age, sex, medications taken, time of day the sample was drawn, and — most importantly — the trend over time, not as an isolated number compared against one threshold.

Mechanism of action

Laboratory reference ranges ('norms') are built by measuring a given parameter in a large sample of people considered healthy and taking the middle 95% of results as the normal range. By mathematical definition, even in a fully healthy population, about 5% of results will statistically fall outside this range — not because something is wrong, but because biological distribution isn't identical in every person.

Additionally, each parameter has its own biological variability — natural fluctuations within the same person between measurements, resulting from time of day, hydration, the last meal, or cycle phase. That's why a single result has to be interpreted with this variability in mind, and the difference between two measurements in the same person is best compared against their own earlier result, not just the general population norm.
