Overview

Sanghuang (sang huang, literally 'yellow [mushroom] of the mulberry') is a colloquial Asian name for a group of bracket fungi growing almost exclusively on mulberry trees, traditionally used in Chinese, Taiwanese, and Korean medicine for centuries. For decades these species were mistakenly classified as Phellinus linteus or Inonotus linteus. Only phylogenetic analyses from 2016 split the old complex into three distinct genera — Sanghuangporus, Tropicoporus, and Inonotus — with the species growing on mulberry receiving the name Sanghuangporus sanghuang. In practice, this means that products sold under the names 'sanghuang', 'sang huang', or 'Phellinus linteus' may refer to different, though related, species.

Over the last decade sanghuang has become a fashionable, premium functional mushroom in Taiwan, China, and Korea, with a growing online sales market in the West as well. Research on this mushroom's polysaccharides and polyphenols shows promising antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activity — almost exclusively in cell cultures and animal models. Controlled clinical trials in humans have practically not been published so far.

It has to be said honestly that, given the current state of knowledge, sanghuang won't help anyone in a clinically documented way — all data on antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lung-protective activity comes exclusively from cell and animal studies, without a single published clinical study in humans. It makes sense almost exclusively as a deliberate choice for people already familiar with functional mushrooms, who accept the high price and the status of a 'promising but unconfirmed' raw material. It is not a suitable choice for someone looking for evidence-based immune support proven in humans, nor for people with autoimmune diseases.

History of use

Traditionally used in Chinese, Taiwanese, and Korean medicine for centuries. For decades it was mistakenly classified as Phellinus linteus or Inonotus linteus — only phylogenetic analyses from 2016 separated out the genus Sanghuangporus. Over the last decade it has become a fashionable, premium functional mushroom in Taiwan, China, and Korea.

Mechanism of action

The main bioactive compounds in sanghuang are polysaccharides and hispidin- and styrylpyrone-type polyphenols. In vitro and in animal studies, sanghuang extracts neutralize free radicals and inhibit NF-κB and MAPK pathways, which translates into lower levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6) in activated macrophages. All of these mechanisms come from cell and animal studies — there is as yet no data confirming these pathways directly in humans.

In a cell study, blocking the secretion of NO, TNF-α, IL-6, and MCP-1 was specifically linked to inhibition of the ERK, p38 MAPK, and STAT3 pathways within the crosstalk signaling between macrophages and adipocytes — a somewhat more detailed description than the general 'NF-κB and MAPK', but it still comes exclusively from a cell model, without confirmation that the same pathways are modulated this way in humans.
