Ganoderma australe is a species that forms hard, perennial fruiting bodies and is widely distributed across nearly the entire world. It parasitizes the base of living hardwood tree trunks, causing white rot of the wood.

Mechanism of action
It contains phenolic compounds, sterols, triterpenes and polysaccharides typical of the Ganodermataceae family. In one in vitro study, a polysaccharide fraction from material identified as 'Ganoderma aff. australe' showed antioxidant activity and reduced the viability of human osteosarcoma cells.
Two separate, unrelated pathways have been documented for G. australe. The polysaccharide fraction showed antioxidant activity under in vitro conditions and reduced the viability of osteosarcoma cells. Independently of that, lovastatin — a natural inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the same enzyme blocked by pharmaceutical statins — was detected in the mycelium.
