Overview

Antrodia camphorata (synonyms: Antrodia cinnamomea, Taiwanofungus camphoratus), known locally as niu chang zhi, is a mushroom endemic to Taiwan that grows only inside the trunks of a single tree species — the camphor tree Cinnamomum kanehirae, itself an endangered and protected species. Taiwan's Indigenous peoples have used this mushroom for generations as a remedy for liver ailments, food poisoning, and alcohol toxicity. Because of its extremely narrow habitat niche and slow growth, the wild fruiting body has become legendarily expensive. Commercially available products come almost exclusively from cultivated mycelium.

The preclinical literature is extensive — in vitro and animal studies describe antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and anticancer effects. This changed somewhat with the publication of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial using a standardized extract from cultivated mycelium, which after 12 weeks showed a statistically significant, if modest, improvement in liver enzymes and triglycerides compared with placebo.

Realistically, this mushroom is only worth considering for people with mildly or moderately elevated liver enzymes — the profile of participants in the only cited RCT — and under a doctor's supervision. For people with advanced liver disease, who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who take anticoagulants, chemotherapy drugs, or immunosuppressants, there is no basis for self-directed supplementation. For a healthy person with no abnormalities in liver test results, the evidence is too thin, and the barrier to entry — price and the need to import — is usually disproportionate to the potential benefit.

Where it's found

Antrodia camphorata grows only inside the trunks and hollows of a single tree species — the Taiwan-endemic camphor tree Cinnamomum kanehirae — at altitudes of roughly 450–1,500 meters. Because the host tree is an endangered species, the wild fruiting body is extremely rare; nearly the entire commercial supply comes from cultivated mycelium.

History of use

For generations, the mushroom was used in the folk medicine of Taiwan's Indigenous communities as a remedy for liver ailments and the effects of alcohol abuse. Due to the rarity of the wild fruiting body, it remained a niche product until mycelium cultivation techniques developed in the late 20th century.

Mechanism of action

The key bioactive compounds are triterpenoids (including antroquinonol), polysaccharides, and compounds with superoxide dismutase-like activity. In animal models, extracts reduced lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress in hepatocytes, protecting the liver from damage caused by carbon tetrachloride, while the derivative antrodin C inhibited the TGF-β and PDGF pathways involved in liver fibrosis. The improvement in liver enzymes observed in the clinical study is consistent with these mechanisms, but has not been fully confirmed.

Beyond the triterpenoids, the mushroom's polysaccharide fraction shows an ability in in vitro studies to activate macrophages and NK cells via pattern-recognition receptors, which partly explains the immunomodulatory effects described in the preclinical literature. Steroid-like triterpenoids may additionally limit activation of the NF-κB pathway, reducing the expression of inflammatory mediators such as COX-2 and iNOS.
