Chronotype is an individual, largely genetically determined preference regarding the timing of sleep, wakefulness, and peak performance over the course of a day — colloquially described as being a "lark" (morning type) or an "owl" (evening type), though most people fall somewhere between these extremes. Chronotype also shifts with age — teenagers physiologically drift toward the evening type, which partly explains their difficulty with early school wake-ups.

Research by Roenneberg and colleagues introduced the concept of "social jet lag" — the mismatch between a person's biological chronotype and the social schedule demanded by work or school. People forced to regularly function against their chronotype (typically "owls" forced to wake up early) show, in observational studies, a higher risk of obesity, worse well-being, and more frequent metabolic problems.

People struggling with chronic fatigue despite seemingly adequate hours of sleep — it's worth checking whether their daily schedule aligns with their natural chronotype. Mechanism of action

Chronotype is largely regulated by the internal biological clock located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus, which synchronizes physiological rhythms (body temperature, melatonin and cortisol secretion) with the day-night cycle based on light signals reaching the retina. Variants in clock genes (including PER2 and CLOCK) partly explain why some people are genetically predisposed to an earlier or later phase shift of this rhythm.

When a social schedule (work, school) forces a wake-up time earlier than a person's natural chronotype phase, a chronic mismatch develops between the internal clock and the actual sleep-wake cycle — this phenomenon disrupts normal cortisol and melatonin secretion, which in observational studies is linked to poorer appetite regulation and increased risk of metabolic disorders.
