Caffeine and Sleep: When Should You Actually Stop Drinking Coffee?

Why popular time cutoffs might be too lenient

This recommendation rests on the seemingly reasonable logic of caffeine's half-life, roughly 5 hours in an average adult. Since half the dose remains in the blood after one half-life, and a quarter after two, it's intuitive to assume 6 hours before bed is a safe margin. A 2013 study by Drake and colleagues, published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, tested this assumption experimentally — with a result that undermines that intuition.

Why half-life alone isn't enough to set a safe cutoff

Half-life tells you how much of a substance remains in the blood, but not how little caffeine is enough to measurably disturb sleep architecture. Those are two different questions — and the study discussed in this article answers the second one, directly and experimentally.
