Overview
Willow bracket (Phellinus igniarius) is a perennial, woody bracket fungus that mainly parasitizes living willows, less often birches and poplars, causing severe white rot of the wood. It is very common across much of the temperate Northern Hemisphere.
Historically, the fruiting body had a practical significance unrelated to supplementation: peoples of Siberia and the Arctic used it for striking and carrying fire, and the charred pulp was traditionally mixed with tobacco for chewing. Modern clinical studies in humans are lacking — available data come almost exclusively from in vitro and animal studies.
It has to be said honestly that today there's no group of people who can be reliably promised a health benefit from this fungus — the available data are limited to in vitro studies and one study in mice, with no human studies whatsoever and no established dosing. The value of willow bracket today is mainly ethnobotanical and historical, not supplemental. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as children, should avoid it entirely.

A very common bracket fungus, mainly parasitizing living willows, less often birches and poplars, causing white rot of the wood. Fruiting bodies are perennial and hard, and can grow on the same tree for decades.
History of use
Documented use by peoples of Siberia and the Arctic for striking and carrying fire; the charred pulp of the fruiting body was traditionally mixed with tobacco for chewing. There are no documented medicinal traditions comparable to the related tinder fungus, chaga.
Mechanism of action
In preclinical studies, polysaccharides and phenolic compounds were isolated from aqueous extracts and are credited with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In one study in mice, an aqueous extract reduced intestinal inflammation by lowering pro-inflammatory cytokine levels.
It's worth separating two strands of the available data: antimicrobial and antioxidant activity relates to a broad in vitro survey of European Phellinus specimens, not to a study of Phellinus igniarius itself acting in the body, while the reduction of intestinal inflammation in mice is a separate, single result in a different model. These two strands shouldn't be treated as one coherent mechanism of action.
