Overview

The shaggy bracket (Inonotus hispidus) belongs to the same genus as chaga (Inonotus obliquus), though it looks nothing like it. Young fruiting bodies are soft, yellow-orange in color, and covered in bristly hairs; with age they darken and harden. It grows mainly on apple trees, more rarely on ash. In Poland the species is uncommon and appears on the red list as potentially threatened.

Current research — almost exclusively Chinese laboratory work — focuses on phenolic compounds and cyclic peptides from the mycelium. The species is not edible and is not sold as a dietary supplement.

Practically no one today derives any real health benefit from this species: the shaggy bracket doesn't exist as a supplement or food product. People looking for antioxidant or anticancer support have access to far better-studied species from the same genus (such as chaga). The only group for whom this entry has practical relevance is people interested in mycology and the direction of research into Inonotus compounds.

Where it's found

Inonotus hispidus parasitizes living hardwood trees, preferring old apple trees, but has also been recorded on ash, elm, and other fruit trees. In Poland it occurs rarely and irregularly.

Mechanism of action

Hispidin derivatives showing free-radical scavenging ability in vitro tests were isolated from fruiting bodies and mycelium. In another study, a peptide extract from the mycelium inhibited HeLa cell proliferation in vitro and in a mouse xenograft model.

The title of the cited study points directly to the mitochondrial pathway as the route by which the peptide extract from the mycelium induces apoptosis — a mechanism that typically involves cytochrome c release and caspase activation. In parallel, hispidin derivatives, a phenolic compound characteristic of the genus Inonotus, account for the described radical-scavenging activity.
