Overview
The clustered bracket (Inonotus cuticularis) is another member of the genus Inonotus, related to chaga but far less recognizable and much less studied. It parasitizes living hardwood trees, primarily beech. In Poland it's rare, recorded mainly in the northwestern part of the country.
Scientifically, the species remains almost completely unstudied: the only species-specific paper found is an Iranian screening study from 2023. There are no clinical studies, and not even any animal studies.
Given the current state of knowledge, this species won't help practically anyone in any measurable or recommendable way — no product, dosage, or human safety data exists for it. The only realistic 'target group' remains mycologists and natural-product chemists interested in profiling compounds within the genus Inonotus. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and anyone taking any medication have no basis for treating this species as safe.
Where it's found
The clustered bracket parasitizes living hardwood trees, primarily beech, forming shelf-like, leathery fruiting bodies on trunks. In Poland it's rare, recorded mainly in the northwestern part of the country.
Mechanism of action
The only available data comes from a chemical screening study that identified compounds including gallic acid, hispidin, and styrylpyrone-class compounds in extracts. Acetone extracts showed some antibacterial activity with low toxicity toward normal human cells in vitro.
The three identified compounds belong to well-understood chemical classes: gallic acid is a phenol widely distributed in nature with documented antioxidant potential, and hispidin and its related styrylpyrones are phenolic pigments typical of the Hymenochaetaceae family, to which chaga also belongs. However, the screening study does not specify the mechanism of the antibacterial activity or the threshold concentrations involved.
