Overview

Ochre bracket (Trametes ochracea) is one of the species most commonly mistaken for turkey tail in Europe. The fruiting bodies are thin, with a zoned, finely felted surface in shades of ochre and cinnamon. It grows most often on dead beech and oak wood.

Reliably telling it apart from turkey tail can be difficult macroscopically. Scientifically, T. ochracea remains in the shadow of its relative — there is a single published laboratory study on a fruiting-body extract, but no clinical trials in humans whatsoever.

Who does this genuinely help, and who doesn't? Today — no one, as a supplement or therapy, because the species isn't sold in any form, and everything known about its effect on the body rests on a single in vitro study. This entry has practical value mainly for foragers and mycology enthusiasts who want to learn to tell Trametes ochracea apart from its far better-studied relative, turkey tail.

Where it's found

Trametes ochracea grows commonly across Europe and the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere as a saprotroph on dead deciduous wood — most often beech and oak. In Poland it has no threatened status.

The only available data comes from an in vitro study of a methanol extract, in which antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activity was observed in laboratory models.
