Overview
Grifola sordulenta is a species from the same genus as maitake, closely related to Grifola gargal, occurring in the same Patagonian forests. It grows almost exclusively on koihue wood (Nothofagus dombeyi). Like G. gargal, it's locally foraged as a wild edible mushroom.
Unlike G. gargal, for which at least one very small human pilot study has been published, no clinical study or even animal study can be found in international databases for Grifola sordulenta — only in vitro test results on cultivated mycelium extracts are available.
Who can this realistically help? Honestly: no one, as a source of health benefits. Unlike Grifola gargal, not a single study in animals or humans has been conducted for Grifola sordulenta. The only real 'target group' is local mushroom foragers in Patagonia, who, under the supervision of an experienced expert, can eat this species as a tasty edible mushroom — not as a supplement or health remedy.
