The term became popular alongside the DIY-biology movement ('do it yourself' in biology) at the turn of the 2010s, and owes its broader popularity to social media, where it's sometimes used interchangeably with marketing slogans about 'hacking' the body. This creates real tension: some practices labeled as biohacking have solid grounding in lifestyle medicine and physiology, while others are unstudied, sometimes costly interventions sold under an appealing name.

Who can realistically benefit from this, and who probably can't? Evidence-based biohacking — systematically measuring, testing, and implementing interventions with a solid scientific basis — makes sense for anyone who wants to manage their health deliberately. Chasing every new, viral practice without checking its scientific basis makes far less sense — telling one from the other is precisely the goal of this platform.

History of use

The modern understanding of the term 'biohacking' derives from the DIY-biology movement of the late 2000s, which included amateur molecular biology labs, and from the Quantified Self movement, founded in 2007 by journalists Gary Wolf and Kevin Kelly, promoting self-knowledge through systematic data. Over the following decade the term evolved to also cover lifestyle medicine, supplementation, and increasingly experimental practices popularized on social media.

Mechanism of action

Biohacking isn't a single intervention with one mechanism of action — it's a methodology and philosophy of approaching health, combining three elements: measurement (blood tests, wearable devices, subjective-feeling logs), intervention (changing a specific element of lifestyle or supplementation), and effect assessment (comparing before-and-after measurements). In this sense, the mechanism of biohacking is the scientific method itself applied to an individual — a data-driven self-experiment, not intuition.

The risk arises when this process is skipped, and the label 'biohacking' alone is used to lend credibility to practices with no measurement or evidence of effectiveness whatsoever. Telling one from the other requires the same critical-thinking tools used to evaluate any other health intervention: the size and quality of available studies, reproducibility of results, and a realistic assessment of whether the effect is worth the cost and risk.
