How to read supplement labels so you don't get fooled — a guide

What's stated on a supplement label doesn't always match what's actually inside the capsule. Here's a practical guide to what to look out for before you buy.

Why this matters at all

Unlike medicines, dietary supplements in most countries don't go through content controls as rigorous or pre-registered as prescription drugs. This means the responsibility for verifying whether a product actually contains what the label claims, in practice, partly falls on the consumer — and independent laboratory testing has repeatedly shown significant discrepancies between declared and actual content.

Step 1: check whether the active ingredient dose is even stated

The label should clearly state the dose of the specific active ingredient (e.g. 'EPA 500 mg', not just 'fish oil 1000 mg'), because the actual active-substance content in a raw material can vary significantly. The absence of such detail is often a sign that the manufacturer is deliberately blurring the difference between the amount of raw material and the amount of the ingredient that actually works.

Step 2: look for independent quality certification

Independent certifications that support a product's credibility

  • An independent laboratory certificate confirming the content matches the label
  • A GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) mark from the manufacturer
  • In competitive sports: 'sport safe' certification confirming the absence of banned-substance contamination
  • A clearly stated production batch number allowing identification

Step 3: watch out for 'proprietary blends'

Myth

If a product contains ten different ingredients in one 'proprietary blend', it must be more effective.

Fact

A 'proprietary blend' often means the manufacturer states the combined weight of all ingredients together, without disclosing the dose of each individually — this makes it impossible to assess whether individual ingredients are present in doses consistent with those used in clinical trials, or in trace amounts.

Step 4: compare the dose with the one used in studies

It's worth checking whether the dose of a given ingredient on the label roughly matches the dose used in clinical trials that demonstrated its effectiveness (e.g. in the corresponding knowledge base entry) — an underdosed 'token' amount often means no real effect, despite the trendy ingredient appearing on the list.

Step 5: don't get tripped up by units of measurement

Different ingredients on labels are sometimes given in different units — milligrams (mg), micrograms (mcg or µg) and international units (IU) — and mixing them up can dramatically change the perceived dose. A classic example is vitamin D3, where 1000 IU corresponds to only 25 mcg, so comparing a product listed in IU with one listed in mcg 'by eye' without converting often leads to wrong conclusions about which product is actually stronger.

This is one of the most common mistakes when comparing supplements — confusing IU and mcg units leads to taking a dose that can be dozens of times different from what was intended, so it's always worth checking which unit a given product is described in before comparing it with another.

  • Is the active ingredient dose clearly stated, not just the amount of raw material?
  • Does the product have independent quality certification or GMP?
  • Am I avoiding 'proprietary blends' without individual ingredient doses stated?
  • Does the dose roughly match the one used in clinical trials?
  • Does the manufacturer provide contact information and details of production-batch testing?

A few minutes spent checking a label before buying a supplement can save money spent on a product that doesn't deliver a real, effective dose. Not every cheap supplement is bad, but every supplement, regardless of price, deserves a critical look at its label.

The most common mistake I see is comparing supplements purely by price per package, without calculating how much real, active dose you're actually buying.
