Following a court settlement, an independent C8 Science Panel was established, which between 2005 and 2013 examined blood samples and health histories of nearly 70,000 residents of the highly exposed region — one of the largest epidemiological studies of a general population regarding a single chemical compound ever conducted.

For PFOA and PFOS, the maximum contaminant level was set at 4 parts per trillion (ppt), practically at the limit of laboratory detectability, which in itself signals how much weight the regulator placed on minimizing exposure even amid incomplete certainty about the exact safety thresholds.

According to EPA estimates, the new standards are expected to reduce PFAS exposure for around 100 million people using public water systems in the United States. What's not worth doing

The supplement and "detox program" market is quick to capitalize on PFAS-related anxiety, offering expensive body-cleansing protocols without solid evidence of effectiveness. Given that PFAS have half-lives ranging from many months to many years and are eliminated mainly by the kidneys at a natural pace, there's currently no convincing clinical evidence that commercially available supplements meaningfully speed up this process in healthy people. The most effective, confirmed strategy remains limiting further exposure rather than trying to accelerate the elimination of compounds already absorbed.

What this data doesn't resolve

Most of the strong epidemiological evidence concerns PFOA and PFOS — the two best-studied, older compounds in the PFAS family, being gradually phased out of production since the 2000s. Newer replacement compounds (e.g., GenX) have a much shorter research history, and their long-term safety profile is less well documented. The safety levels set by the EPA are conservative by design (close to the detection limit), reflecting the principle of regulatory caution rather than a precisely established threshold below which no risk at all is observed.
