Citrulline malate is a combination of the amino acid L-citrulline with malic acid (malate), promoted mainly for its hypothesized effect on nitric oxide production in the body — a compound that dilates blood vessels and theoretically improves the delivery of blood, and thus oxygen and nutrients, to working muscles during exercise. This biologically plausible mechanism made citrulline malate one of the most commonly added ingredients in pre-workouts across the entire sports supplement market.

The problem is that a plausible biological mechanism doesn't always translate into an equally clear, practical effect at the gym — and the literature on citrulline malate is more ambiguous than its marketing popularity suggests. Two independent meta-analyses, including one published as recently as 2026, give answers to this question worth knowing before your next pre-workout purchase.
