But does chewing gum actually affect appetite and subsequent food intake in a way that can be measured in a controlled experiment?

The answer, as is often the case in nutrition science, is: yes, but on a much smaller scale than popular advice might suggest. Two independent experimental studies did show a measurable effect — and it's precisely the numbers from these studies that let us judge whether it's worth adding this habit to your routine, and what to realistically expect from it.

The first study — less hunger and less pasta at lunch

The starting point is the 2007 work by Hetherington and Boyland, published in the journal Appetite — one of the first controlled studies testing the effect of chewing gum on subsequent food intake.
