Overview
Zinc is a trace element involved in the work of over 300 enzymes and in the regulation of gene expression through so-called zinc fingers — structural motifs of DNA-binding proteins. The body doesn't store significant amounts of zinc, so regular dietary intake (meat, seafood, including oysters, one of the richest natural sources, pumpkin seeds, legumes) has a direct impact on its bodily status.
Zinc deficiency, more common in people on plant-based diets (phytates in grains and legumes limit its absorption), competitive athletes, and older adults, is associated with weakened immunity, slower wound healing, taste and smell disturbances, and, in men with confirmed deficiency, lower testosterone levels. However, supplementation in people with normal zinc levels doesn't raise testosterone above baseline values — the effect applies only to correcting an actual deficiency.
Who can realistically benefit from this? People on plant-based diets, athletes with high requirements, and anyone with a confirmed deficiency on a blood test. People with normal zinc levels and a varied diet rarely gain additional benefit from supplementation beyond standard requirements.
Mechanism of action
Zinc serves as a catalytic or structural cofactor for hundreds of enzymes, including carbonic anhydrase, DNA polymerase, and numerous metalloproteinases. In the immune system it's essential for the proper differentiation and function of T lymphocytes and NK cell activity, which explains the strong link between its deficiency and weakened immune response, especially to upper respiratory tract infections.
In the context of hormone balance, zinc participates in testosterone synthesis at the enzymatic level in the testes and regulates the activity of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. In men with confirmed deficiency, supplementary correction restores normal hormone concentrations — this effect, however, doesn't occur in people with normal zinc levels, which distinguishes it from the typical, exaggerated marketing promises of 'testosterone boosters.'
