Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus), commonly known as 'Siberian ginseng,' is a plant from the Araliaceae family, traditionally used in Russian and Chinese medicine as a remedy to strengthen resistance to stress and fatigue. Despite the similarity in name, it doesn't belong to the genus Panax and contains a distinct class of active compounds — eleutherosides, not the ginsenosides characteristic of true ginseng.
A review by Panossian and Wikman, one of the most comprehensive summaries of adaptogen research, classifies eleuthero as one of the better-characterized members of this group, with documented effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and on resistance to physical and mental fatigue under stress conditions.

Where it's found
Eleuthero grows naturally in coniferous and mixed forests of Siberia, northeastern China, Korea and Japan, in a cool continental climate. Traditionally its root was harvested and used in the folk medicine of these regions for generations as a fortifying remedy.

Eleuthero gained particular popularity in the Soviet Union in the mid-20th century, where it was intensively studied by Soviet scientists, including Israel Brekhman, who coined the term 'adaptogen' largely in the context of research on this and similar plants, in search of natural substances to support the performance of athletes and cosmonauts.
Mechanism of action
Eleutherosides, the main active compounds in eleuthero, show in animal studies an ability to modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which may ease the physiological response to chronic stress by normalizing cortisol secretion. This mechanism is shared by many adaptogens and partly explains the improvement in subjectively perceived fatigue resistance reported in studies.
Eleuthero also shows, in animal studies, effects on muscle energy metabolism and a moderate immunomodulatory action, supporting the activity of innate immune system cells. These two mechanisms — supporting the stress response and modulating immunity — are interconnected, since chronic stress itself weakens immune function.
